Tell Me I Can Tell Me I Can (Christian Prommer Remix) Untitled Free Harmonic Blues Come Out Of The Shade Katabatic Oort Tabla Techno SCR

Four:Twenty return in 2009 as strong as ever with this extended play release from James Mowbray & Leiam Sullivan, “Tell Me I Can”.

Comprising of eight original tracks and one rather stunning remix from Innvervision genius Christian Prommer, “Tell Me I Can” is one hell of a way to kick off the year and doesn’t disappoint which is unsurprising given Mowbray & Sullivan’s pedigree.

Here, the duo have created a body of work which draws on a huge palette of sounds drawn together with a strong theme of melody; old school house sensibilities collide with modern production techniques on “SCR”, the organic seamlessly melt into the inorganic in the percussive “Come Out Of the Shade” and early-Aphex ambience gets a dub-techno shot in the arm on “Free Harmonic Blues”.

Even the more teutonic, techno-influenced side of the Sheffield/London based pair sneaks in some cleverly placed keys on “Katabatic” and the Kraftwerkian “Oort” before the sublime, true deep house of “Untitled” draws us toward the title cut where an understated arpeggio and ethnic vocal come together into a near perfect example of modernist, deep, house music. Finally, Christian Prommer takes on the aforementioned “Tell Me I Can” and proves why he is where he is by respectfully and deftly propelling the track in to hypnotic, peak-time territory in the best possible way.
